COMMENTS: Given the high stakes challenges we face today – whether social or environmental – it is clear that now is the time for us to join together and find new ways to bring about change. Although that may have a familiar ring, it is still true. The call to action could not be any louder.
The good news is people are coming together to make some of the decisions we need to make and take some of the actions we need to take to help heal and tend to the needs of our people, our ocean, our planet. This website is one way for me to join in and reach out. I feel very fortunate to have been able to share some of what I see in our world, through writings, photos, and talks over the last couple of years, and to have met so many very concerned and committed people along the way. The community is growing. [Due to the constraints of Covid-19, my in-person events have been put on hold, but please return to check out the "Events" page in the coming months.]
Poking around this website, you’ll find some photos , mostly of west coast marine wildlife (especially sea otters . . .), but also some beautiful creatures from the opposite side of the world in the Serengeti. There is also information about two books I'm excited about, and I will be adding information on several other books soon. I’m posting some columns I’ve written about sea otters and ocean stewardship over the last few years, with a more complete archive to be added soon. Because of my background in law, I can’t resist also posting a few recent legal decisions that fill in some of the story of how sea otters have been “managed” in that always-tricky relationship between humans and nature.
Below are a few links to articles and talks. I’ll be adding more information, resources, and links soon, so come back as often as you’d like. And please feel free to email to strike up – or continue – the discussion!
Thanks.

"Two thumbs up! This real-life tale of a sea otter pup and his mom is a coming of age story. Sometimes young ones, both humans and otters, get into trouble along the way. Children can easily relate to little Sabby in this respect. The book is about growing up, adventure and triumph, and how the will to survive leads to the emergence of natural instincts and newly found abilities." -Doris Harvill, life-long educator

About the book:
The Edge is a dramatic snapshot of the California coast's past, present, and probable future in a time of climate change and expanding human activity. Written by two marine experts who grew up on the coast, The Edge is both a celebration of the coast's natural and cultural uniqueness and a warning of the many complex changes that threaten that uniqueness.
The Pacific coast is the most iconic region of California and one of the most fascinating and rapidly changing places in the world. Densely populated, urbanized, and industrialized -- but also home to wilderness with complex, fragile ecosystems -- the coast is the place where humanity and nature coexist in a precarious balance that is never perfectly stable. As ocean levels rise, coastal communities are starting to erode, and entire neighborhoods have been lost to the sea. Coastal ecosystems and wildlife that were already stressed by human settlement now face new dangers, some threatening their very existence.
The combined impacts of climate change, housing and commercial growth, commercial fisheries, oil drilling and production, along with environmental advocacy, all come together to define the future of the region. A masterful and sweeping synthesis of environmental and social science, The Edge presents a comprehensive portrait of natural and cultural history -- the story of the people, communities, industries, ecology, and wildlife of the California coast.

This is a must read for anyone who shares their love for the coast and concern for its future." -John Laird, California Secretary for Natural Resources, and Chair of the California Ocean Protection Council
"I loved this book. A paean to the California coast, weaving together science, history, and politics, from two of the most eminent, and personally invested, scholars on the subject. If you want to pull together the myriad impressions and questions of a drive or hike down the coast, if you want to understand it on all its many facets -- read this book." -Andreas Merkl, President, Ocean Conservancy
"Steinhardt and Griggs have marshaled a wealth of compelling evidence, intriguing lore, and unabashed advocacy to rally our steadfast support of California's 'Edge.' Listen and learn." ―Donna McCrohan Rosenthal, The News Review
